Established in 1892, Auburn takes its name from the red clay in the area, which early residents used to dye cloth red. The city has served as the terminus for the Seaboard Railroad Hub between Athens and Atlanta, and later as a college town where homes served as boarding houses for students of the Perry Rainey Institute.
